Side

Side 73

Side’s historical city centre stands on a promontory flanked by two excellent beaches of golden sand.

Most of the tourist accommodation is situated just outside ancient Side and in the resort of Kümkoy, which lies to the west; and in Titreyengöl, to the east.

Titreyengöl is located in a beautiful forest. It is well known for its fresh water lake and superb hotels.

This area is soon to benefit from a purpose built golf courses. Public transport is readily available by taxi or dolmus (mini bus) affording easy access from both of these resorts to Side old town.

Side old town offers visitors a multitude of activities from the bustling array of shops, restaurants, bars, night clubs and water sports. Before sundown you can enjoy a meal at a waterfront restaurant whilst watching turtles swimming in the bay and later explore the many bars and night clubs which remain open until the early hours of the morning.

Once the secret rendezvous of Anthony and Cleopatra, the ruins of the ancient city now blend seamlessly with the new and despite its development as a resort it still retains its own very special atmosphere and charm.

The word “Side” means pomegranate and the town gained its name from the ancient harbour which roughly resembles the shape of this exotic fruit. The symbol of Side is the pomegranate.

The impressive second century amphitheatre provides the dramatic open air location for the annual Side Festival of Opera and Ballet. There are fine views towards the sea and you can still see the remains of an ancient Roman street lined with pillars, arcades and the market place where slaves were once sold.

Nearby, the Agora Baths Museum contains a beautifully restored fifth century bath house, interesting statues and other artefacts. The bustling, colourful streets leading down to the harbour offer bargains galore for the expert (and even the not so experienced) barterer. There are shops selling Turkish Delight, designer jeans (both fake and real) but all at lower prices than at home.

Handcrafted embroidery, lace table cloths, serviettes, carpets, leather goods and a wonderful selection of gold/silver jewellery. The Saturday market in the neighbouring suburb of Kemer is also worth a visit for clothes, lace, fresh fruit and vegetables.
